In many cases, to simplify installation on site, steel structures are assembled at the fabrication yard or on site into modular structures (e.g. bridges, pipe bridges), which are then lifted by crane and set in their designated position. Unfortunately, many engineers do not check the strength of the structure during crane lifting, leading to plastic deflection and overstress that permanently damage the structure.
When a structure is lifted, it receives larger loads than in operation. As per DNV-ST-N001, you need to consider the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF), uneven sling load distribution (SKL factor), shift of the centre of gravity (COG factor), rotation (Yaw Factor), and the effect of using 2 cranes (Tilt Factor).
In this OJT you will learn how to analyse the strength of a structural module during lifting (Lifting Analysis) using STAAD PRO, as per DNV-ST-N001 as applied in oil & gas projects, and how to select the right slings, shackles & padeyes.
With this analysis, structural failures during lifting can be avoided because the structure has been designed as per DNV-ST-N001.
